Reversible Bubble Skirt

Oh my gosh by golly this is cute!

A bubble skirt has been on my "list" for a couple years now, but I never could decide excactly how I wanted to create the bubble. Making the bubble is like driving. There are several ways you can get to the end, and all routes will reach the same destination. I started playing around, and finally figured out which method I like best.

Hint: NO shirring is necessary.

I didn't plan to market it as reversible, but it is, and the photographer wanted to shoots pictures from both sides.

I'm so glad she did!

I think we'll sport one of these on Easter Sunday.

Right in time for Christmas! It's our new tutorial, a ruffled Christmas Tree Skirt with six layers of ruffle.

This holiday tree skirt sewing tutorial includes the option to make a tree skirt in three different sizes ranging from a diameter of 50″ to 64″. This is a perfect project for re-purposing old sheets and curtains. The festive skirt looks lovely with a single monotone hue or a mix match of festive fabrics.

This tutorial is designed for intermediate seamstresses, who are not afraid of gathering large quantities of fabric. The ruffle tree skirt takes a significant amount of time to make.

This thing takes a ton of TIME and FABRIC to make. Fabric requirements are outlined in the listing.

The tree skirt tutorial includes three different sizes, and I highly recommend a serger and a gathering foot for this undertaking. These products aren't necessary, but they are extremely helpful.

Whether you like it or not, Christmas is right around the corner. We've already had our annual family phoot shoot, so I wanted to feature a little somethin-somethin for the boys - suspenders!!

This requires very little sewing!!!

Suspenders require very little sewing!!!

It's super easy to coordinate suspenders with sibling outfits, and since they are adjustable, they will last for a longer period of time.

I think every lil' man needs a pair of these. Couple them with a bow tie or a vest, and you are all set!!

The Ruffler Foot

I finally broke down and bought a ruffler foot. This bad boy is lifechanging, and the only regret I have is the fact that I did not purchase it sooner!

For anyone who has a ruffler or is thinking about purchasing a ruffler/gathering foot, there is a free tutorial/download on You Can Make This. There is a bit of a learning curve to figuring out your ruffler foot. I have an old school Bernina, and I bought a non-brand ruffler foot. Each machine, make, and model require different feet, so double check the specifics, before placing an order.

Gathering and ruffling are now a breeze. Diaper covers. Ruffle skirts. Sun Suits. Check! It only takes a matter of moments. No longer will I spend hour upon hour gathering ruffles or avoid a project, because it would take too much time to gather. OH - and the ruffles are perfect - absolutely beautiful and equally distributed. You can adjust the amount of ruffle from a little to a lot using settings that gather once per stitch, once per six stitches, and once per twelve stitches.

It will take some time figuring out the kinks to your gathering foot, but once you do, your only regret will be in waiting so long to make the purchase!!

Pinterest is a collection of pretty pictures linked to websites pertaining to photography, recipes, blogs, crafty creations, sewing, children, organizing, etc. It's a fabulous way to organize your list of web generated, inspirational to-do list.

This is a reversible little number, and super simple to make. Hand sewing is for the birds, so you will not need to sew a single stitch by hand (unless your machine goes ka-put!).

Sneek Peek - Tee Pee Tutorial

I've been writing about a top secret tutorial that's in the works on Facebook, and recently I've seen a plethora of tee-pees on the Internet, so I decided to reveal our next release and top secret project -a tee pee tutorial!

Tents and tee pees will be perfect Christmas gifts, and the entire thing folds up quickly and easily to fit in a little corner of a closet. You'll need a few supplies, including five PVC pipes, and in total, supplies (not including fabric) will cost between five and ten dollars at your local hardware store. This is a perfect project for repurposing old fabrics, curtains, sheets, etc.

I cut fabric to use to write this tutorial, and I cannot seem to find it anywhere! I like making this tent with one primary fabric, but it's also fun with a mix-match of prints.

I'm working on the tutorial now, and the first draft is almost ready!!

Allison Olson is the winner of the Facebook guessing game. She was the first to guess that I'm working on a tee pee/tent.

Are you eager for this release? It takes a lot of fabric, but it's a VERY easy sew!

The lime green tent above was made using recycled curtains that I picked up at a garage sale for five bucks. I had enough material to make two.

Baby Doll Twirl

Introducing the Baby Doll Twirl!

Originally, the dress pattern was written for sizes 6m-8, but we deleted sizes 7 and 8 based on tester feedback.

Oh - this one does require shirring the straps, but it also has an option for elastic instead of the shirred version. I've held off as long as possible on adding a pattern with shirring. Why? Some people are scared to shirr. Enough nonsense. It's time to start, b/c shirring really isn't scary, and once you start, you'll be very glad you did, and you'll quickly want to shirr everything in sight. It's fun, easy, and the results are cute and unique.

My mom showed me a really neat trick yesterday for making ruffled edges using knit. I have Nana Lizard on constant lookout for white shirts at Goodwill, b/c they pair beautifully with all our skirts and dresses. She had several white tops on hand and showed me an easy way to feminize and girlify tees and long sleeves you have.

Life

Does your life seem overwhelming at times? I'd describe ours as a whirlwind of sorts. Is anyone else worn down? Are you blogging less, sewing less, exercising less - or is it just me?

I have nothing though provoking or incredibly exciting today, but I will give you a run down of the ins and outs of Little Lizards as of late.

One of my siblings is getting married soon. We are very excited. Another is having a baby. They had two devastating miscarriages earlier this year (one happened the night before her medical boards - could you imagine?), so we are very excited that they've made it through the first 14 weeks. My husband has been unbelievably wonderful throughout my entire course schedule, and he is in just as much need of a break from child and household duties as I am from grad school. My personal goals have taken a nose dive, and work is incredibly busy.

I have a list of tutorial and pattern ideas brewing, but I have not yet made time to put them together. We did have a few pattern releases this summer, including cargo shorts, girly capris, and a reversible a-line dress with the option for should knot ties and a gathered strap. I swear I cut out the fabric for a massive project that I hope to release well before Christmas, but we cannot find the fabric anywhere.

I haven't breathed a word of what's in store. Not yet!

Over the past few months, in windows of stolen time, I've ventured a bit out of the realm of sewing exclusively for children and have made a handful of double sided napkins, tons of tote bags, two pleated bed skirts (made from recycled fabrics), a few piped pillows, and probably a handful of other things I can't remember right now.

I hope you've found a few stolen moments as well. We all need a bit of "me" time every once in a while.

A little bit about me and my world.

1. The only pattern we sell that is suitable for a 20-something is the corset top. The reason I know this is because I used to wear similar little numbers to go dancing when I was a young soul. They were probably the same size as our kiddo versions. Oh the shame. Never again!

2. My current favorite pattern is the A-line dress. It's reversible, simple, and easy. What more can you ask for? I'll list this one very soon in our online shop. It has two strap options, gathered and tied.

3. It was 93 degrees last night at 9:30 p.m. That's ridiculous.

4. I am a former marathon runner. Today, my only long distance, endurance activities involve late night sewing sprees.
5. Speaking of endurance, I just submitted a 40 page paper for grad school. No idea how I fared, but I did turn it in upon completion, thank goodness.
6. We have a top secret tutorial in the works. I will not start writing the pattern until early September, but it's gender neutral, perfect for upcycling old fabrics, and will make the best Christmas gift ever. Stay tuned...

8. The pattern I've made more than any other (overall) would likely be the Tote Bag and/or the Ruffled Diaper Cover. The ruffled diaper cover is one of my favorite baby shower gifts. I love white fabric paired with soft pink, serged edges. I made four or five in July, so I'll be certain to post pictures at some point.

9. My husband is the most supportive and encouraging man I know. Without him, I would be a complete disaster. Words are not adequate. Not even close.
10. My lil' bro. recently got engaged. I have visions of a sweet little flower girl and ring bearer all decked out in LLK.

11. I am a total sucker for beautiful pictures...but you already knew that!

P.S. I made two pleated dust ruffles and a pair of piped, lined shams this week that are total fabulousness. Nailed the dust ruffle on the first try! I repurposed upholstery fabric I already had (originally compliments of goodwill or garage sales), so the projects were close to free. My greatest cous. is in the process of gearing up for her first apartment, so I plan to help her decorate with some upticked linens, once she nails down a color scheme! We are also sending her home with all our junk we no longer want, that she is thrilled to take. I remember those days of yore when anything was wonderful as long as it was free. TTFN.

Copycats - Flattering or Offensive (TEXT heavy!)

Copycats. Do you have one? I think everyone in any creative endeavor has either experienced the upsetting experience of copying or being copied. Throughout this pattern process, I've experienced both sides of the copycat coin.

At the onset of my sewing pattern business, someone in real life accused me of copying one of their products. She sold finished products. I sold sewing patterns. These markets are completely different. It was an interesting predicament; this person learned to make a particular item from a popular sewing blog, yet she accused me of copying her.

I thought long and hard about her accusations and how I should respond to them, because I truly wanted to do the right thing, and in the end, after much deliberation and contemplation, I realized I had done nothing wrong. I forged ahead in the pattern biz, and never looked back. It was hands down the right decision - a difficult decision, but nonetheless, the right one.

Imagine if I had shut down the shop at that point in time! I really think that this mom and pop sewing shop has benefited far more than my little family. Thousands of people have learned to sew, started a business, supplemented their family income, and/or gained confidence to try something new. Little Lizard King and friends have donated countless items to charity, bonded with friends while making dresses for Africa, Mexico, Honduras, NICU units and more. And on a personal note, this sewing shop has helped me to discover my gift. I've found my creativity, and I finally feel like I've identified something I do well - my natural skill set. None of this would have been possible, if I had let one negative comment get to me.

On the flip side, I've had a few people email me to tell me that this or that pattern on Etsy look just like mine. Other pattern designers may hear the same. It's an interesting situation, and recently, many of the patterns are starting to look similar. Who's to say that we didn't come up with the same idea at the same time? Not me. Are they copying? Maybe. Maybe not. We have no idea what is in someone else's head or heart. Can people come up with the same ideas or receive similar inspiration at the same time? Can someone else look at something adorable and replicate it. Certainly. I often wonder why people are hesitant to share. Every one of you has a unique style, perspective, and gift. Why do we often compete against one another rather than work together?

Aprons, dresses, skirts, and even sewing patterns have been around for generations. Ecclesiastes states that there is nothing new under the sun. I certainly didn't invent the idea of handmade clothing but neither did anyone else in our generation. Can we teach or be taught? Can we inspire or be inspired? Can we provide or be provided for? ABSOLUTELY! The real question is how can you make your product stand out? What makes your product or customer service unique?

I am continually amazed at the products that are available from the creative people in our community, and I am proud to be one of the creators. Are we the first to design a skirt, dress, or pants? No. Are we a creative and inspiring force? Of that, there is no doubt.

We've have recently welcomed several new pattern designers to the mix, and I've answered many a question about how to get started, what program to use, etc (Hailey Bugs Closet, Cute Little Patches, Yards and Yards, and more!). You all have supported me from the onset. Why wouldn't I support you and yours in the same endeavor?

If pattern writing is something you have considered, I would absolutely encourage you to jump in. If selling products is of interest, start sewing and selling! What do you have to lose? This sewing pattern shop has been life changing for me and my family. I've never ever worked harder, slept less, or had more fun. You may feel the same. I truly believe in welcoming talent aboard and encouraging you in the process, as there is -hands down- more than enough room for each and every one of us! The only question is - how can we work together to support one another?

One of my favorite bloggers, Miss Mustard Seed, recently wrote a thought provoking post about copycats. I asked for her for permission to feature her post.

Marion writes:

"I get a lot of e-mail with questions...mostly about paint and furniture and stains and waxes and running a creative business. I do get a few asking me about a sensitive issue...What do you do when someone copies you outright. Should you be flattered? Should you be offended? Should you confront the person?

Well...it depends.

First of all, a copycat is always flattering, even when you feel ripped off.  Someone likes what you do and wants to do it, too. People usually don't copy someone they think stinks. So, take it as a compliment.

There are times when copying is okay...even encouraged. We are in the world of DIY blogs, after all. We're trying to teach our readers how to make something, paint something, sew something, build something and we shouldn't be surprised when they do it and show it off. Donna and I had a blast with the Copy Me Challenge we ran in January. It was fun to see our styles through the eyes of others.

We also have to remember that there are some people who are very creative and others who aren't. Some can't make things up as they go along. They have to follow a picture, tutorial or the design of someone else...and that's totally okay. I love it when I get pictures or links from my readers sharing a piece they made that was inspired by my blog. Not only did they love what I made, but they loved it enough to bring it into their own home or sell it in their antique booth. It's one of the best compliments someone can pay.

I think things get sticky when the "copier" is making a profit off the "copy" and/or not giving the true creator any credit for the idea. What's even worse is when the "copier" is in direct competition with the creator. I think that's the line where imitation becomes irritation. Here are some things to think through when this happens...

Is it maybe a coincidence? It really is possible that you both had the same brilliant idea around the same time. I was so excited about my sheet music line of Christmas ornaments, only to find that Pottery Barn was doing the same thing! Those thieving, copying, no-good, lousy, rotten... No. Not at all. Pottery Barn creates their lines well in advance and we were both just following trends and taking them in the same direction.

Is it really going to hurt your business? If you've created a name for yourself in your field, chances are it won't hurt your business if there are a couple of Etsy sellers out there making the same thing you are.  Your customers are going to want your work and will probably recognize the knock-off.

Use this as an opportunity to spur on your own creativity.  Move on and develop new ideas and projects and pieces. Stay one step ahead. I know this is hard when you create one thing over and over and that's your forte, but you can always change things up a little...even just how you stage and photograph your work.

If you're going to confront the person, make sure you keep yourself above reproach. There's a way to approach the issue without being a total jerk about it. Write the e-mail or contact the individual when you're calm and after you've slept on it. Get the opinions of others and see if they think the copying is as blatant as you do. Also, decide what the goal in contacting the offender is...do you want them to stop? Can you even control that? Do you just want to let off some steam? Know what you want before you initiate something.

Now, there are times when copying violates the law and I'm not even going to get into that. I'm not an expert on copyright and trademarks and all of that. I'm just mentioning it to say that there are times when going after someone who's copying you is within your legal rights and the best thing to do.

Here are some good rules to keep in mind when you're the one doing the copying...

If you're keeping the piece for yourself, I think most designers/artists will be okay with it. If it's just for you in your home, go for it.

If you want to sell the work you're copying, first of all, it may be illegal. At the very least it may really offend the person you admire and it may take your business down a notch if you're classified as a copycat. Why not change it up to make it your own? You're in love with a pillow you saw on Etsy. Instead of making one exactly the same and selling it on Etsy, make one in a different fabric, color, shape, style, etc. If you find you are totally lacking in the creativity department, there are plenty of books and blogs that give permission for the work to be copied exactly and sold. If there's a doubt, send the creator an e-mail and ask for permission. It could save you a lot of grief.

Lastly, always give credit. Be gracious to the people who inspire you and link to their blog, book or shop.

I know many of you have exclaimed frustration when people have taken your pictures, ideas, product inspiration.... Does this post speak to you? How have you dealt with the inevitable business conflict?

At first I was frustrated...but the longer and harder I considered the situation, the less upset I became. If you are working hard, acting honorably, and staying ahead of the curve, you have nothing to lose. Don't let the one negative ninny get you down. Instead, focus on the tens, of hundreds, of thousands of others who enjoy your custom couture, simple sewing patterns, perfect pictures, or whatever else finds your fancy.

I recently whipped up a couple pillows for a friend who is re-doing her tweenage daughter's bedroom.

The trim, which also looks great on birthday party hats is called Eyelash, and it can be found in a couple color combinations at Hobby Lobby.

Totes are my new thing. I've been making them like crazy.

One of my friends gave me something similar for a hostess gift, but bags have a million different functions!

It all started with a giant beach bag. In my opinion, bags are never large enough. These are much smaller, market style, but I've also made a couple that are monstrous!

Now - off to find more zebra fabric. Several of you have asked. The green zebra is sold in the woven form at JoAnn, and you can find a green zebra knit at Hobby Lobby. JoAnn seems to be sold out nationwide. If you've recently picked some up, let me know!

Tote Bag Tute

I have made about a billion of these things over the last month.

Tote bags are going to be my go-to gift of the year.

They are EASY, and they hold everything!

The largest bag is 24" wide finished, and it's super deep. It will easily hold four large beach towels.

I couldn't find a tote big enough. So I made my own, and I added a few other sizes as well. These are fully reversible and there is an option to use clear, plastic vinyl to make the totes water resistant - perfect for the pool.

Ruffle Fabric & Pattern Release!

Have you heard of Ruffle Fabric?

I'd been seeing these cute projects all over the internet, but it wasn't until Ruffle Fabric sent me a batch of colorful ruffled fabric to play with that I actually gave it a try.

Of course, as soon as the ruffle fabric arrived in the mail, my machine broke. It was probably serendipitous, b/c I was really nervous about sewing with ruffle fabric. Yes, I was very intimidated. I finally jumped right in, and I'm glad I did. So far, I've made multiple totes and dresses, skirts, and the more I use the fabric, the more I like it. Next up is a little black mini for me. Yep. I NEVER sew for me, so I think it's about time! Don't you?

Along my new found love of ruffle fabric, I picked up a few tricks.

My ruffle fabric tid bits and fun facts are as follows:

1. Cut fabric with scissors. Ruffle fabric is difficult to keep in place, so I suggest avoiding your rotary BFF for the time being and use scissors.

2. No hemming necessary! Ruffle fabric is ready to go, immediately after cutting. EASY peasy! I love this fact. It saves so much time.

3. Gathering is a breath of fresh air with RF. It's almost effortless. You have to keep the ruffles out of the way of your needle, but the actual gathering process is a cinch!

4. Attaching gathered ruffle fabric to regular fabric is a bit tricky. You need to pay constant attention, and keep pushing unruly ruffles aside. I've found that the smaller the ruffle, the harder to maneuver. However, with smaller ruffles, mistakes are less noticeable. Larger ruffles are easier to use, but mistakes are more obvious. Ruffle Fabric sells wide elastic that can be attached directly to the ruffle fabric, and you could eliminate gathering by using this, if you are making pants or a skirt.

5. When sewing side seams together, I found that it's helpful to remove the tray on your sewing machine, and let your ruffle fabric hang down. This will naturally force the ruffles to lay flat, and when you sew sides together, the ruffles will lay down in the proper direction.

6. There is no top or bottom when it comes to ruffle fabric. Ruffles will flow in either direction. You can use the fabric in both up or down positions. I spent ages trying to figure out which side was the top and which was the bottom. It turns out - it doesn't matter.

7. Ruffles run from selvage to selvage, and the fabric is anywhere from 48"-52" wide. The ruffles range from 1/2" to 3" long. The fabric is pretty stretchy, light, and breezy.

8. Ruffle Fabric is a bit pricey, but don't let the price tag deceive you. Considering the fact that I buy almost all my fabric at JoAnn or Hobby Lobby (always with coupons), RF costs more than my budget permits. HOWEVER, I am hands-down sold on it. Using ruffle fabric saves so much time - and breaks even price wise. I used my Little Princess Ruffle Dress bodice to make this dress with ruffle fabric for the skirt. I used less than 1/2 yard of ruffle fabric, and considering how much fabric my ruffle dress requires, it costs less using Ruffle Fabric and the time is saves is invaluable!

Pennant Banners

One of my friends recently became an official citizen of the USA. The citizenship process took almost a year and took a ton of work. She was so excited to pass the tests! I had some red, white, and blue fabric on hand, and quickly cut the fabric into pennants for a larger banner, and I used the scraps for an itty bitty banner.

We surprised her with a celebration party full of red, white, and blue. She was thrilled! Ironically, only weeks after receiving her citizenship, she and her husband received a job offer in Austria. The pennant banner will bring American hues to her new home abroad. It's bittersweet.

P.S. Note our new couch which is in the background of these pictures. Our neighbor sold us her old sleeper sofa, which looks like a Pottery Barn couch. It replaced my husband's old soft that he bought for $25 dollars twenty years ago. It was a total eye sore, but oh-so-comfy.

We (actually he and my friend's husband) walked this little lady across the street. The best part, aside from the price and convenience, is that the entire couch is slip cushioned, so when the white pillows get dirty, which they certainly will, we can toss the covers in the laundry. Oh - it's also a sleeper, which means we can delay buying guest room furniture even longer. And - our basement no longer looks like a college apartment! My niece, who is currently furnishing her first college apartment, plans to use the 20+ year old couch, and she couldn't be happier with the hand-me-down.

Poppy Seed Fabrics

I quickly whipped it into a couple twirly skirts.

Isn't the fabric simply scrumptious? I loved the fact that Kim sent me a collection of matching fabrics, because it took ALL the effort out of making fabric decisions. I can't tell you how much time I spend pairing, matching, and sorting fabrics. This was so easy comparatively speaking, and the result was perfect - aside from the small child sitting in my lap while I sewed! Such is the life of a mommy seamstress.

To start, cut a piece of plywood or MDF 3' x 63". Your local hardware store will make the cuts for you. A width of 63" will fit a queen bed, plus a couple inches.

If you want a tufted headboard, measure and draw an X to mark each location you want to tuft. Drill a hole through each X; drill holes through the plywood in the exact location you want the tufts/buttons.The larger the bit, the easier it will be to thread your upholstery needle back and forth later. My holes were too small, and it was really tricky feeding the needle back through the plywood.

Cut the batting a couple inches wider and longer than your plywood. I used three layers. You can also use egg crate mattress pads and thick foam. The foam is pretty pricey, but I think it would be REALLY cushy. Apply spray adhesive to each layer of batting. The adhesive is optional. The third layer of batting was a hodge podge of remnants.

Place your fabric on top of the batting. You need enough fabric to hang over all edges by 3-4". I bought a little over 2 yards of upholstery fabric.

Evenly pull the fabric over the batting and staple the edges of the fabric to the plywood. I trimmed the bottom edge.

The corners need a few extra staples.

You certainly don't have to do anything else, if you are happy with your headboard as is, but if you like the tufted look, you'll need a button cover kit, 1 1/8". Upholstery fabric is too thick to cover these buttons. I improvised with a solid I had on hand. The thinner the fabric, the easier it is to cover buttons.

Thread an upholstery needle with embroidery thread.

Cover buttons using instructions on the button kit. You could also spray paint the button covers, and forgo covering them with fabric (Thanks, Harmony!). Never would have thought of that on my own.

Locate the previously drilled holes. Poke the needle from the back of the plywood, through one of the drilled holes to the front, upholstered section of your headboard. Push the needle back and repeat the process of pushing the needle back and forth once or twice again. Tie the button off with a couple knots.

Pushing the needle back through the drilled hole is the trickiest part, especially if you drill the holes too small.

Repeat this process with all the buttons you intend to use. I have brown brocade trim that I've considered adding around the edges. What are your thoughts on adding trim? Yes or no?

Once you finish, find a nice husband to help you hang this headboard on the wall or rest the headboard on wooden legs. We attached these heavy duty ring hangers to the headboard, and used 4" screws that we drilled into studs.

Now that I have a nice headboard, it's time to make some fun accessories and pick a paint color for the wall. Funny how an inexpensive headboard project turns into a complete bedroom overhaul. Hey - we are still using my childhood furniture in our master, so I think it's time for a little change - even if it is just accessories and a headboard.

The room needs something fun like coordinating throw pillows with a splash of color - any ideas?

Random Tips

There is always something new to learn - especially when it comes to sewing.

I have two favorite tips. Both involve spit.

1. When threading a needle, lick your fingers, and run them over the thread AND the needle first. It makes threading the needle much easier.

2. I have had a few minor incidents with my rotary blade. Sound familiar? If you bleed on your fabric or anything else, spit on the blood. Your saliva will remove your blood stain. My mom used to make bridal gowns and bridesmaids dresses and was notorious for sharing this tip with the brides to be. It's a sure fire solution. Just remember - your spit will not remove your child's blood stain, only your own.

Now - what are your sewing tips and tricks? I'd love to hear what you have to share.

P.S. I made the sweetest set of newborn ruffled diaper covers; both were made with white fabric and soft pink serged ruffles. Oh - they were gorgeous; probably my all time favorite. Simple and sweet. My wonderful mother in law offered to take them to the post office, so I didn't have time to snap a picture. Next time I will; they were WAY too sweet. Almost angelic.

I need a few testers for a tote tutorial.

If you are interested in testing, please leave your email address and your turn around time. If you have a blog, Etsy shop, or FB page, please link to one - something that includes examples of your work. You do not need to be a sewing super star. I need a variety of abilities.

There are multiple sizes included in the tutorial. Options are included for adding a clear, plastic, vinyl lining in addition to a fabric lining. I suggest using home decor fabric and webbed straps.

The pattern is not yet finished, but I'd like to go ahead and line up a few testers who are willing to follow the tutorial as it is written - no deviations or additions on the test, please!
